How to choose lights

Silhouettes and gauging

A backlight behind the part shows its outline with the sharpest edges.

Shiny, flat or engraved

Coaxial light shines along the lens axis and shows marks on flat reflective surfaces; a low-angle ring or bar light lifts engraving and scratches.

Curved and reflective

A dome or shadowless light wraps the part in even light without glare.

Moving web

Line-scan lights put a bright, even line under a line-scan camera.

Which colour?

Use a colour opposite the feature you want dark, or the same colour to make it light; red is the common default for monochrome cameras, IR passes through many plastics.
