O-ring surface appearance: use coloured angles to expose changes in shape
The real RGB capture shows a seal outline with red and blue bands around its curved surface. The angle-coded lighting creates a useful image signal for an appearance trial without turning one image into a 3D measurement.
Use coloured angles to create a repeatable appearance signal, then validate the decision.

The challenge
A curved dark seal can hide local shape and surface changes under a single lighting direction.
Colour changes may come from slope, position, texture or contamination, so a defect rule needs labelled samples.
How it was solved
The source uses a three-colour angle-coded inspection light for the circular seal example. Different angles produce different colours in the observed rim.
The current LS-SAI21066-RGB-M2 is an alternative family version, not the exact source light. Confirm its three-angle RGB configuration and independent channel control with the controller.
Why it works
- 1
A curved surface returns different illumination angles toward the camera at different positions. Colour can therefore carry useful appearance information.
- 2
The bands are not a calibrated height map and do not demonstrate seal performance or a minimum defect size.
Lighting application-lab catalog capture
Evidence you can inspect
Red and blue rim bands are visible around the circular seal in the supplied capture.
The source captions the example O-ring defect inspection under an RGB inspection light; it supplies no numerical detection or dimensional result.
One application image. The proposed M2 version differs from the source light and requires validation on the actual seal geometry.
From image contrast to a production decision
What to validate on your part
- 01
Collect good shape variation
Include allowable mould seams, parting lines, texture and rubber-batch colour changes.
- 02
Use known defects
Test nicks, flash, contamination and deformation close to the reject limit.
- 03
Lock the colour recipe
Fix white balance, exposure and ring outputs; verify position variation before setting thresholds.

Parts in this setup
LightOur pick
LS-SAI21066-RGB-M2
178.5 mm AOI light, SAI series (LS-SAI21066-RGB-M2)
Current 210 mm RGB-M2 family proposed in a confirmed three-angle RGB assembly. Source examples use different non-M2 versions. The catalog variants list single colours, so the full RGB build must be confirmed instead of defaulting to red.Lighting configuration: Complete three-angle RGB assembly and independent channels to confirm; do not substitute one single-colour variant.

MV-CS050-10GC
Hikrobot MV-CS050-10GC 5MP Area Scan Camera, GigE, IMX264, Color, Basic
5 MP colour global-shutter camera for colour and angle-coded contrast; confirm colour processing and exposure in the trial.

LensOur pick
LS-KF3528M-ML
35mm, F2.8, 1.1", C-mount, Macro lens (59 mm (-0.7X) to 150 mm (-0.25X)) (LS-KF3528M-ML)
Proposed 35 mm C-mount macro lens. The illustration uses its printed 0.25x magnification at 150 mm working distance. The proposed camera sensor gives a derived 33.7824 × 28.2624 mm field. Confirm field, focus, port clearance and residual distortion on the actual sample; this is not calibrated measurement accuracy.

"Tested" identifies the part named in the source. "Our pick" is a proposed alternative or supporting part. Confirm colour, optics, controllers, power supplies, cables and mounting before ordering.

Mount the optics with intent
The station is an optical test bench, with its two lighting holders included in the catalog listing. The 3D column and base follow the published height and footprint. Carriages, clamps and part supports are schematic: confirm camera screw pattern, lens support, light fasteners, permissible load and actual travel before ordering.
Complete the electrical system
Select a controller against the exact light voltage, drive mode and power, then confirm camera data/power/I/O cables and a suitable PC. These are not silently added to the proposed optical kit.

Camera and available lens CAD are published models. Lens and light envelopes use printed dimensions. The linked station uses its published base size and column height; carriage, brackets, fittings, parts and spacing are illustrative. Confirm load, travel, fasteners and clearances before ordering. Light paths explain the arrangement and do not simulate optical performance. Representative part geometry is illustrative, not reconstructed inspection evidence.
