PCB adhesive under UV: separate material presence from board texture

The supplied UV board captures show bright material contrast on populated electronics. They support a trial for adhesive presence and spread while keeping component appearance, coating and solder reflections in the test.

Identify what fluoresces before deciding what the bright regions mean.

The challenge

A PCB contains coatings, inks, solder and component bodies that may respond differently under UV.

A bright region can be the desired adhesive, a coating or an unrelated reflection unless the material is validated.

How it was solved

The source provides two separate 365 nm examples: one with a UV bar and one with a UV ring. They do not form a controlled comparison on the same board.

The proposed LS-BS15030-UV365 bar differs from the source bar. Start with one illumination direction and confirm whether more coverage is required before adding another unit.

Why it works

  1. 1

UV-responsive adhesive can become easier to segment from the board when its emitted spectrum and the camera filter are well chosen.

  2. 2

The images demonstrate material contrast under the source lighting; they do not identify every bright region as adhesive or quantify coverage.

Evidence you can inspect

Visible in the images

The first board capture has a blue bright region; the separate ring-lit board has strong bright contrast around components.

What the source reports

The source labels both examples UV adhesive inspection on circuit boards and names their bar and ring lights.

How to use this evidence

No material formulation, camera filter, threshold, acceptable coverage or cure measurement is given.

From image contrast to a production decision

What to validate on your part

  1. 01

    Measure material response

Compare adhesive, solder mask, conformal coating, markings and flux residue under the selected UV/filter combination.

  2. 02

    Include placement variation

Use populated boards with acceptable adhesive spread as well as known missing and excess deposits.

  3. 03

    Test obscured areas

Check shadows beneath tall components and at the edge of the required bead region.

Parts in this setup

Build this system

"Tested" identifies the part named in the source. "Our pick" is a proposed alternative or supporting part. Confirm colour, optics, controllers, power supplies, cables and mounting before ordering.

Source evidenceIndependent bar-lit and ring-lit board examples
Proposed bar envelope150 × 30 × 24 mm
Camera and lensSource versions not identified; current proposed parts below
3D spacingIllustrative, to be confirmed on the sample
Derived proposed field84.456 × 70.656 mm = sensor dimensions / 0.1x; source field not supplied
Mounting (proposed)LS-BT-XZ-G-6-6045; 600 mm column, 600 × 450 mm base, glass tray and two light holders

Mount the optics with intent

The station is an optical test bench, with its two lighting holders included in the catalog listing. The 3D column and base follow the published height and footprint. Carriages, clamps and part supports are schematic: confirm camera screw pattern, lens support, light fasteners, permissible load and actual travel before ordering.

Complete the electrical system

Select a controller against the exact light voltage, drive mode and power, then confirm camera data/power/I/O cables and a suitable PC. These are not silently added to the proposed optical kit.

Camera and available lens CAD are published models. Lens and light envelopes use printed dimensions. The linked station uses its published base size and column height; carriage, brackets, fittings, parts and spacing are illustrative. Confirm load, travel, fasteners and clearances before ordering. Light paths explain the arrangement and do not simulate optical performance. Representative part geometry is illustrative, not reconstructed inspection evidence.
