Carrier-tape pockets: see components through a reflective cover film

The source compares two flat-dome lights on the same type of glossy part. The revised illumination makes the useful surface information clearer; the manufacturer's images show the change without a claimed production detection rate.

Treat cover-film glare as an optical problem before changing the algorithm.

Chip pockets beneath reflective cover film

Camera and available lens CAD are published models. Lens and light envelopes use printed dimensions. The linked station uses its published base size and column height; carriage, brackets, fittings, parts and spacing are illustrative. Confirm load, travel, fasteners and clearances before ordering. Light paths explain the arrangement and do not simulate optical performance. The part geometry is illustrative and is not reconstructed from the camera image. The proposed field is derived from the printed lens magnification and camera pixel dimensions; actual coverage and focus need a bench check. Representative part geometry is illustrative, not reconstructed inspection evidence. The light-guide panel is shown transparent to explain viewing through it; its internal construction is schematic.

The challenge

The cover film on component carrier tape reflects the light into the lens. That reflection competes with the chip and pocket detail the inspection needs.

How it was solved

The application sheet compares white LS-SDL-0127 with white LS-DOM-0050. The latter is the proposed light below.

Camera, macro lens, station and final part spacing are proposed. The source does not state its exposure, camera or lens.

Why it works

  1. 1

A broad diffuse field reduces localized glare and patchy reflections.

  2. 2

The source comparison demonstrates image visibility. It does not establish a smallest detectable defect or a guarantee that every surface finish will behave the same way.

Evidence you can inspect

Visible in the images

The revised flat-dome capture shows clearer repeated chip and lead detail through the film.

What the source reports

The source captions describe reduced reflection and clearer imaging; no quantitative inspection result is given.

How to use this evidence

A lighting manufacturer's application demonstration. The source supplies no customer deployment, defect-size limit, repeatability study or production false-call data. Proposed camera, lens, field, mounting and spacing are not the system the manufacturer tested.

From image contrast to a production decision

What to validate on your part

  1. 01

    Include finish variation

Collect good and known defective parts across realistic gloss, colour and coating variation.

  2. 02

    Lock the geometry

Fix the light height, camera axis and fixture tilt before comparing image contrast.

  3. 03

    Verify visibility and false calls

Test the smallest relevant surface feature at the final exposure, including glare and dust that must be tolerated.

Mount the optics with intent

The station is an optical test bench, with its two lighting holders included in the catalog listing. The 3D column and base follow the published height and footprint. Carriages, clamps and part supports are schematic: confirm camera screw pattern, lens support, light fasteners, permissible load and actual travel before ordering.

Complete the electrical system

Select a controller against the exact light voltage, drive mode and power, then confirm camera data/power/I/O cables and a suitable PC. These are not silently added to the proposed optical kit.
