Coaxial light or dome light?

A coaxial light sends light down the camera axis through a half-mirror (beam splitter). Flat, mirror-like surfaces reflect it straight back, so they look evenly bright, and any dent, scratch, print or contamination that scatters light looks dark. Use it for flat shiny parts: wafers, glass, polished metal, film, PCB pads and laser marks on flat metal.

A dome light lights the part from every direction at once. It suits shiny parts that are curved, crinkled or uneven (cans, foil packs, ball bearings), where a coaxial light would only light the flat spots.

Choosing a coaxial light

  • Size: the emitting window must be larger than the field of view, since only the part under the window is lit evenly.
  • Working distance: the camera looks through the light, so the light sits between lens and part; check the room.
  • Colour: red for general use, blue for fine scratches on metal, white for colour cameras.
  • Brightness: the half-mirror loses part of the light, so coaxial lights need more power than a ring light for the same image; a strobing controller helps on moving parts.
