Moulded bottle bases: read the cavity code under a dome light

The source image shows the base of a moulded bottle under a white dome light: a five-point star in the centre, a ring of curved moulded marks and a raised two-character code. The code stands out from the surrounding moulded relief.

Diffuse dome light evens out the curved base so the moulded code can be read.

Bottle-base mould code

Camera and available lens CAD are published models. Lens and light envelopes use printed dimensions. The linked station uses its published base size and column height; carriage, brackets, fittings, parts and spacing are illustrative. Confirm load, travel, fasteners and clearances before ordering. Light paths explain the arrangement and do not simulate optical performance. Representative part geometry is illustrative, not reconstructed inspection evidence. The specimen and lighting distance are representative, not dimensions or settings recovered from the source capture.

The challenge

A cavity code moulded into a bottle base identifies the mould that made it, but it has the same colour as the base and is surrounded by other relief.

The curved, glossy base sends hot spots back to the camera under direct light.

How it was solved

The source identifies the white dome light with a 138 mm luminous size for reading characters on the bottom of a bottle.

Use the proposed monochrome camera through the dome's 30 mm camera hole, then locate and read the code against known cavity codes. The source does not name its camera, lens or software.

Why it works

  1. 1

A dome surrounds the part with diffuse light from many directions, which evens out the reflections from the curved glossy base.

  2. 2

Raised relief still changes the light slightly at its edges, which outlines the characters without a hard shadow.

Evidence you can inspect

Visible in the images

A raised two-character code, a central star and a ring of curved moulded marks are visible on the base.

What the source reports

The source captions the example as inspecting the characters at the bottom of a bottle and identifies the white dome light.

How to use this evidence

One source capture. No base size, code set, read rate or bottle material is supplied.

What to validate on your part

  1. 01

    Use every cavity code

Collect bases from each mould cavity, including worn and faint codes.

  2. 02

    Check code position

Confirm the code is found at every rotation of the bottle.

  3. 03

    Measure reader outcomes

Record correct reads, no-reads and wrong reads on a separate labelled set.

Build this system

"Tested" marks the part the manufacturer used in its application test. "Our pick" is our proposed alternative or supporting part, not tested by the manufacturer in this set-up. Confirm colour, optics, controllers, power supplies, cables and mounting before ordering.

Source camera / lensNot specified in the source image caption; proposed parts below
Proposed lens point0.1x at 152 mm, printed lens pair
Derived proposed field84.456 × 70.656 mm = sensor dimensions / 0.1x; not a source test field
Dome envelope (printed)OD 198 mm × H 96.5 mm; 30 mm camera hole
Luminous size (printed)138 mm

Mount the optics with intent

The station is an optical test bench, with its two lighting holders included in the catalog listing. The 3D column and base follow the published height and footprint. Carriages, clamps and part supports are schematic: confirm camera screw pattern, lens support, light fasteners, permissible load and actual travel before ordering.

Complete the electrical system

Select a controller against the exact light voltage, drive mode and power, then confirm camera data/power/I/O cables and a suitable PC. These are not silently added to the proposed optical kit.
